Unique Starting Lineups

Hi All,

Does anyone have access to a quick method for generating the number of unique starting lineups employed for each team in the NBA over the past (regular) season? I'm sure it must exist in one of the public or private databases out there, but I haven't stumbled upon it yet . . .

Based on this article, STATS LLC has the numbers and presumably their subscribers would too. If you know any and they were willing to talk about it.

It appears the Kings had the most with 26 unique starting lineups as of late March.

I'd guess the average is somewhat under 10.

I know of no publicly available, quick grab source for the team by team detail, though there is a chance it might be in official NBA media guides?

A check of available data for western playoff teams shows an average of 326 total lineups used, with the extremes being about 50% more (New Orleans) or 50% less (Lakers).

Maybe you/someone could write a scraper to work on the basketball-reference.com lineup page? (e.g. http://www.basketball-reference.com/tea ... start.html). You'd only need the number from the header for the section at the bottom.

Good link. I didn't realize those pages existed.

(I had noticed the navigation drop-down menu recently and made a note to check it out soon. Just not quite soon enough to notice the starter page on my own. The clubhouse page has a nice presentation of last 10 game player data with indicators of notable change.)

Using the pages mentioned I found the average in the west to be 14.7 unique starting lineups in this regular season. 12.2 for western playoff teams, 17.6 for the others.

The Heat tried 14 starting lineups and ended with a hideous performer. The Mavs tried 22 and ended up with a bad performing one. the Thunder tried 9 and ended with one that is ok at best. The Bulls have the best of the group after trying 8 but it is barely above neutral on raw +/- and is not a huge source of the success. Did they all make the decision to put more emphasis on winning the rotation war or is this an unintended shortcoming? Was it relatively a fluke that they survived this long? It seems unusual, worth noting.
