New NBA Analytics Site

Post by BigLeagueInsights »

We're launching a new NBA analytics site, http://bigleagueinsights.com, and will be focusing on using data to better understand basketball. We have a few articles published that focus on what we can learn from last season's data, especially the new SportsVu Player Tracking data. We also do some analysis of NBA betting trends, with articles on last year's trends for both sides and totals.

There's a lot more to come, but one unique feature we offer is an "advanced box score" attempts to use advanced statistics to tell the story of the game. You can check out a sample here:
http://bigleagueinsights.com/box-scores ... 06-15-2756

We'll be providing advanced box scores for every game this season.

We plan to publish articles throughout the season and would be grateful for any feedback. We hope you enjoy the site!

Good wishes.

What do you mean by Real True Shooting Percentage? Is it traditional TS% or something a bit different?

In http://bigleagueinsights.com/top-ten-nb ... ince-2000/ only two of best ten lineups since 2000 won titles? The minimum 10 minutes per game might be too high. I use 250 minutes for the season usually, though maybe there is a middle ground.

This is an interesting extension on a current conversation on pace and the value of player motion.

Thanks Crow.

We've parsed the play-by-play data to calculate a team's actual possessions, so our "Real True Shooting %" doesn't use an estimate like the traditional TS% metrics you'll see on other sites. Our formula is:
TS% = Pts / ( 2 x ( FGA + [2FT] + [3FT] ) )

where 2FT is the number of times you go to the line for 2 shots, and 3FT is the number of times you go to the line for 3 foul shots. Technical free throws and "and ones" are not included in the calculation.

Here's what the traditional True Shooting Multiplier for Free Throws for past seasons should have been. The usual number is .44, but we've calculated the actual Multipliers as follows:

Season Type 2FT or 3FT FTA Avg Multiplier
2013 Regular 25171 58029 0.433765876
2013 Post 1929 4391 0.439307675
2012 Regular 23730 54533 0.435149359
2012 Post 1764 4085 0.431823745
2011 Regular 19223 44472 0.432249505
2011 Post 1714 3974 0.431303473
2010 Regular 25563 59937 0.426497823
2010 Post 1837 4186 0.438843765

So .44 is a good approximation, but the error adds up after a lot of possessions.

Deleted my post.

The site actually is listed in the linkage thread - I missed it.

Question for you: How soon will these box scores be posted after the game? These would be really helpful to writing a post-game recap.

Today we took a look at the value of player motion. Does motion create more open shots?
