Team Sortable NBA +/-'s

Post by CappieP »

Can someone link to a place where I can see adjusted plus-minus ratings of NBA players that includes a breakdown of their relative contribution on offense and defense? And most importantly, that can be sorted by team. It would be great if I could set my own date parameters as well.

It seems like I've seen that info before, but I can't find it now.

Thanks for any links!

I have suggested team sortability for RPM estimates several times. Hasn't happened at ESPN. RAPM was team sortable for a time at its independent site but mostly wasn't.

But you could cut and paste every page here http://espn.go.com/nba/statistics/rpm/_/sort/RPM
into excel and then team sort yourself. I have done that before.

Will RPM estimates ever make it to ESPN player pages? I've suggested that too. I have been lead to believe the authors of RPM would like some display enhancements but nothing beyond the original design has happened to my knowledge. Oliver didn't get that done and Alimar hasn't either. Unclear if they favored it or had the power to make it happen. The relic of PER (missing most of shot defense and favoring usage heavily) continues to get more visibility there. There is a difference between being reserved or skeptical of rollup metrics and sticking with an incomplete, some would say distorted one.

One thing you can see with team sorted RPM is how the extreme high player estimates are usually accompanied by teammates with quite low estimates. Is it the best distribution or perhaps over (or under) stretched? Has anyone at the degree of symmetry between the strong positive and negative estimates on teams or done any other team level analysis of the distributions? Have the RPM authors anything to say on the topic? I should get to that but great if someone else wants to look into it. When I looked at before I don't recall going beyond general eyeball observations about the team patterns.

Thanks for your comments crow. Glad to know it's been suggested to the ESPN folk.

Let me ask a simpler question. What do you think would be the best way for me to identify the players on each team who are plus defenders and minus on offense, and the reverse?

Establish an excel database as suggested then:

a) use sort for DRPM column high to low as first criteria and ORPM low to high
and then reverse

or b) find -ORPM plus DRPM (highest negative best fitting your request #1) and ORPM -DRPM for every player (highest positive being best for second question)

Which teams are you seeing that effect for other than the Clippers, Thunder and Warriors?

The 44-4 Warriors are -6.7 with Speights on the floor
Of the top 4 players by MP in OKC, Waiters is the only one with of a +/- of <+12, at +5.2
The Clippers are -3.7 with Rivers on the floor, worst +/- among the top 5 bench players. He and Crawford provide very little, from a BoxScore perspective, other than below-average-efficiency scoring

Who should these players rank ahead of?

For the sake of correctness: CappieP asked for "adjusted plus-minus". Real +/- is a BoxScore-informed version of adjusted plus-minus. "Pure" Adjusted +/- I sometimes post on twitter, but without team info

Is RPM a 50-50 blend of SPM and RAPM? If so, do you run those 2 separately then average the RAPM (2.1) with the SPM (3.1) to create an RPM (2.6)?

The very high adjusted plus minus estimates (not the raw plus minus that JE talked about erroneously or at least for some reason not directly related to my point or my understanding) accompanied by very low comment was a long ago observation so I don't recall team names but my memory was that it was pretty wide spread, though probably with RAPM. I'll look again later. Either with a database sortable by team names I assembled earlier this season or more likely with a fresher one for easier discussion when I do it again since it is not readily available and I am on my phone at this time.

Yeah it is gone. Supposedly due to database configuration issues with google (... and perhaps arrangements with another organization?).

Try this historical RAPM data site https://sites.google.com/site/rapmstats/
or shutupandjam's files.

Colts18 RPM is not a simple average of the two. The SPM is a prior. But I know you want a fuller explanation and from JE.

Some people including myself have averaged the RPM and BPM after the fact. Some think that is redundant, unnecessary. I still find it worth doing to give some more data points between the two metrics in their own to consider. Sometimes the difference between them is small, sometimes it is big. That is information that leads to more understanding or more questions. If the gap is big I might tend to evaluate the player as being in the middle, at least until I study, understand and critiques the RPM and BPM values more, the specific player's and everybody's.

I may do more analysis later but here is a quick pop.

Of the 12 guys who have estimates over plus 6, 75% are on teams with one or more rotation guys under -3. in cases with more than one over plus 6 there are usually 2 below 3. Now there are about 70 guys under -3 so I guess this may not be a surprising pattern (that I was looking for) but that includes many guys not in main rotation and generally would be expected to be heavier on bad teams, i.e. teams usually lacking a superstar. Maybe the pattern was stronger in the past and maybe this concern is not that big a deal now. Stepping back a bit to be responsible, I'll say that for now until I do / find more. But it may be worth further analysis upon seeing that RPM estimates most of the super teams are playing at least one guy in the main rotation which it estimates to be at replacement level or well below and often two. Believable and surprising or not that believable and needing some further investigation to see who is off, the coach or RPM? Seems worth asking in this world of doubt, doubt of several kinds, possibly legitimate doubt. Or brief look at these guys with poor to terrible RPM estimates it is believable to me that they are that bad and that GMs and coaches have made important mistakes, though I still wonder if the RPM estimates might be somewhat overstretched presentations of the greatnesses and weaknesses. Would a time on court pro-rated Steph Curry turn most or all nearly average teams into one of the 30 best teams of all-time (plus 8 MOV) by himself? That is the simple projection from his plus 10.9 RPM estimate. Maybe that is fair or maybe it is a bit much.

Arguably, RPM estimates could be deemed more useful, more reliable for intra-team comparisons than comparisons between players on different teams since the context is far more immediately similar. But the urge to rank the league and market who's best has led RPM estimates to be displayed league-wide and by position but not at all by team. Strange to me, but not necessarily surprising.

I don't know that but I would bet the blend ratio is defined by regression each year (or presumably after every calculation) to maximize out-of-sample prediction performance at the whole league level. I guess it's heavier on the SPM side in early season (to limit absurd names and avoid criticism of ESPN by mainstream) but progressively RAPM weighs more towards the end of the season. In the end RAPM side will weigh significantly more.

These are all assumptions but I think I know how the metric runner approach these kind of things.
