Improved Players 2017-18
Re: Improved Players 2017-18
Chriss was at +0.74 in overall vanilla RAPM as of 12/6. He was -4.49 last year.
Z-scores made more sense because the range of the ratings at this point in the season is a fair amount smaller than it is at the end of a season when there's more data. For instance, Curry is first as of 12/6 at +3.78, whereas LeBron was first last year at +8.28.

Only about half of these seem to be in agreement with their boxscore stats' differences.shadow wrote:Here are the top 20 most improved players in vanilla RAPM. The improvement is in terms of how much higher their RAPM z-score is this year compared to last year.Code: Select all

In some cases, RPM joins in with the non-concurrence.
Denzel Valentine appears as one of the most unimproved, z-score difference of -2.80; here are some other rates, last year and this year:

About 1/3 of the total sample is pretty weird when you look at other summary stats. Showing just the changes from last season:

These numbers are a couple days old. The LeBron-Love-Wade dynamic is interesting for sure.

Re: Improved Players 2017-18
Looking up this year's numbers at b-r.com and espn -- then converting to "wins" added in this year's minutes, relative to last year's rates -- here's how my bottom 12 rank, by average of these 4:Towns, Wiggins, Cousins, and George all show small improvements in RPM; the other stats concur with eWins that they've dropped off.
For Westbrook, it's BPM that has fallen most sharply. For Crowder, it's RPM. With Hill, Durant, and Teague, it's Win Shares.

Win Shares says Adams, Murray, Casspi, and RHJ are hot.
PER is highest on Sabonis and Aldridge.

Don't hear Valentine discussed. Very poor start iirc. RPM of better than -1 is not bad for a 2nd yr guy.

Re: Improved Players 2017-18
Most improved is year over year and obviously some were horrible last season.
It would be a different list but it would also interesting to know who improved most compared to and over position average for x years experience or age.
If you improved a lot but are still below average for your age / experience that should imo temper the excitement about the accomplishment, some.

Re: Improved Players 2017-18
Obviously some would never give the MIP award to either a below avg player nor to a superstar who was already a star.
The one change that makes sense to me is to compare the current season to a player's best previous season ever; thus negating those guys bouncing back from one terrible season.
However, as long as the words "most improved" are used, I'll just take them literally. Biggest per-minute improvement times minutes, basically.

Re: Improved Players 2017-18
At 86% of the season; this season on the left, last year on the right:In addition to the improvements seen above, Oladipo has doubled last year's steals and blocks rates.
DeJounte Murray is a 6-5 PG whose only improvement is to double his rebound rates. On the Spurs he's 2nd in both DReb% (to Gasol) and OReb% (Aldridge), among their top 12. Oh, he's doubled his stealing rate and cut turnovers also.
Best rebounding guards (700+ min.)Just 2 dozen guards (not G-F) get even half the rebounds that the top 2 get.
