I used to run a website, magicmetric.com, that listed the NBA player ratings on a per minute and per game basis. I could never decide which of the two were more important, so I ranked players by a product of the two. The average player had a per minute rating of .4/minute with good players averaging over .5 per minute. .6/minute was an all star and .7 was a candidate for league MVP.
But I tried to find a stats site to run the metric, and either I made a mistake in my ratings, or NBA players are now playing at a much higher average than historical averages. if anyone is motivated to check my math, you can google Magicmetric.
Here are the top 100 players if my math is not mistaken (ranked according to the product of the per minute/per game)

Magic Metric Player ratings
Re: Magic Metric Player ratings
Is this a per minute thing?
I've never heard of Thomas Bryant.
I've never heard of Thomas Bryant.
Re: Magic Metric Player ratings
He said MM is per minute * per game product.
Thomas Bryant is a 2017 draftee of Lakers, waived, picked up by Wizards. Was doing well early this season. Hit a game winner recently. Free agent this summer.
There was a revival thread here on MM in 2012 if one wants more detail.

Re: Magic Metric Player ratings
I was hoping someone else would do the math and find my error.
I can't believe the performance per minute has increased that much.
Perhaps it has, with the rule changes to the NBA.
It may be interesting to contrast the Magic Metric Player rating system with Player Efficiency.
Here is the current ranking based on efficiency. The top three players remain the same
but notably Kevin Durant slips from 7th to 14th.

Re: Magic Metric Player ratings
Here is a link to the old thread, paper about the metric and formula if anyone wants to understand and / or check the math. http://apbr.org/metrics/viewtopic.php?f ... 600#p12600
I can understand the debate about value by per minute or per game. Taking the product is one option but I'd rather know and keep them separate. The product will increase the spread beyond the real world difference by either measure alone.
