When should you bench someone in "foul trouble"?

Post by rainmantrail »

I tried searching for this topic but couldn't quite find what I was looking for. J.E. did some nice work on the effects of a player's defensive efforts when they're in foul trouble, but what I'm wanting to look into is when a coach should and should not pull a star player from the game after drawing "too many" fouls. My gut tells me that players get pulled too early, too often, and that the time they miss as a result of getting pulled isn't quite made up by the later minutes they might otherwise gain back by not fouling out. I'm thinking of framing it similarly to how you'd frame when to go for it or not on 4th down in NFL games. It seems like a similar decision in basketball. Has anyone looked into this before?
