Play sequencing

Post by Crow »

Going to mention play sequencing again. Something apparently I did 8 years ago and perhaps at other times.

If NBA teams are not going to organize around lineups and are going to emphasize plays foremost, there should be tons of attention to play sequencing. I see some reference to play sequencing for video games and other sports but not the real NBA (except for dribble sequencing which is not an interest of mine). I probably should look at other sport references and game theory references but not right now.

There ought to a Sloan paper on this or something serious somewhere, but on quick look I see almost nothing. A video mentions the concept of play sequencing out of a specific set but I've not yet seen any analytics.

Need to be a big data analysis, so not really something I am suited for leading execution, but I'll try to think more about the topic.

I thought thru a simple design then elaborated on it extensively last night.

Fwiw.

Teams (and opposing teams) know the sets and called plays. The type of play / shot is known by the pbp data. If you know the former, study that too; but at least study the latter. What you got is more important than what you were trying to get.
