'24-25 commentary
Re: '24-25 commentary
Zach Collins,, Keldon Johnson and mostly importantly Devin Vassell are all well worse than -10 by team +/- on court and on / off. The absolute bottom on team.
Vassell is shooting and passing pretty well but career low on rebounding (pathetic under 5% total rebound rate) and D-BPM and not showing fit results.
Peaked 2 years ago on Darko and steadily down since. I did not support his huge 2nd contract. Just 173rd on O-Darko and surprisingly bottom 10% on D-Darko combines for 349th in league overall. The offense flattened at zero and the defense has steadily worse from the beginning. Points on bad team made him an object of hope and way over-rated and paid. Injury is involved. Maybe I should back off some but the bottomline is a disappointing status.
The current team record is deceiving about long-term prospects imo. I don't really think they have turned the corner fully. They don't have many positive players and are playing negatives more than they probably should. Paul has raised the present but the after is probably lower without significant new developments. Even the now is not safe. 3W-5L in last 8 with none of the losses close.

Re: '24-25 commentary
Noticing that all SAS starters have good on-off and all subs are negative, I wonder if there's a benefit to sharing the court with Paul and (usually) Wemby.Zach Collins,, Keldon Johnson and mostly importantly Devin Vassell are all well worse than -10 by team +/- on court and on / off.
Here are the splits for those who have started and also come off the bench:
Code: Select all
San Antonio : as Starter as Reserve
Spurs G min ORt DRt +/- G min ORt DRt +/-
Castle 17 519 105 119 -0.5 8 162 78 112 -9.6
Sochan 10 300 112 111 +0.2 3 66 118 115 -8.5
Collins 4 83 119 109 -11.6 20 259 114 114 -8.2
Collins has had great individual numbers as a starter, but he's no Wembanyama.
Re: '24-25 commentary
Spurs top 6 by BPM:
Wembanyama, super star
Chris Paul +1.4
4 negatives, 3 mild, almost -5 for the highly favored Castle.
Chris Paul, Harrison Barnes, Julian Champagnie, Stephon Castle on court, no Devin Vassell, +10.8pts / 100p in 217 minutes. With Vasell instead of Castle, just 2 frickin minutes. +158. That trio with Castle or Vassell, -6.4 in 171 minutes. So use one but test both. At some point. Sooner the better. But also test without Paul and Barnes. All 3 combo of Champagnie, Vassell and Castle are negative and very lightly tested. Without Castle as well, -31.
There are no lineups with Webanyama but without Paul tested over 50 minutes. Wembanyama - Castle, no Paul is 50 minutes and +5. Almost everything else without Paul is negative and few that aren't are under 15 minutes.
So in my mind, the tentative future core so far might be Castle- Wembanyama... or just Wembanyama.
Champagnie is very cheap for 2.75 more years. Sochan pretty cheap for 1.75 yrs. Keep long-term in big role? What options can they generate? Which bench pieces do they keep at what prices? Lots to decide.
Vassell's contract might look better than some over-paid for current impact young and half decent examples but he is just half-decent at best at this time.
I'd trade anyone not named Wembanyama for something better. But would want a clear plan first, not evident in current collection.
Castle, weak shooter, bottom 15% on D-Darko. Meh passer. Is that ideal or just acceptable for now? Shooters? I guess Vassell is that. Few, too few others. Definitely not Sochan.
Mamukelashvili on expiring, Bassey with one more year after. Re-sign? Satisfied with limited testing? I'm not. What is Cissoko? Extremely limited run. Wesley and Branham use cut. Let Wesley walk this summer? Fine by me. Branham? Probably. Use cut in half from last season. Maybe they've decided. Bad draft choices. Really disliked the Wesley pick. Not in my top 60 and not close. Thought better of Branham and am not totally out on him. But limited use is probably not going to make a strong case.

Re: '24-25 commentary
Jaden McDaniels, 8 of 10 rotation pairs negative. Tied for best BPM of career... at -1.2. Darko projection is pretty much flatline from peak 2 years ago. By rank, he is an 8th or 9th man on offense and 3rd or 4th on defense.
Re: '24-25 commentary
Warriors should make massive trades.
Kuminga must go. Weak 3. Getting to rim by far least of career and only average at it. Weak lineup data.
Schroder, Podziemski, Moody and Anderson trades should be explored fully (and many other lessers).
Green and Wiggins should be considered
All depends what you can get but this mix ain't it.

Warriors in a fight to make play-in with Suns and Spurs. Somebody misses.
Presumably Sixers will get there but who do they knock out?

Re: '24-25 commentary
If possible, Heat should try to get help on shooting, shot defense and / or rebounding.
Re: '24-25 commentary
I'd want to see Ware - Adebayo. Used 1 minute.
Ware, no Adebayo +10 on 175 minutes.
Adebayo, no Ware +1.

Re: '24-25 commentary
Butler to Griz could be interesting.
Too good an outcome for Butler for Riley to do? Depends how much he can squeeze and what the alternatives are.

Re: '24-25 commentary
Wizards are by far worst performing team.
30th on offensive and defensive efficiency and bottom 8 on every factor. Pretty weak from Moreyball perspective.
Contender for worst performing team in NBA history.

On Lakers -Mavs trade:
https://x.com/bballstrategy/status/1886116593362743480
More selective observations on Doncic:
About average efg% and ts% this season. Slightly below from 3.
Lowest FT rate of career.
Lowest rim fga rate of career with 2 straight declines. 40% of peak and just 50% of rookie season.
45% of shots from mid-range. Good within 15 feet, not from 16-23 feet.
Team rebounding and assist rates barely change with him on vs. off.
Haven't heard whether he took or waived trade kicker.

Lakers unbelievable work this trade deadline oh my goodness
Re: '24-25 commentary
Blazers, 10 wins in last 11. Streak began when Grant replaced Sharpe in starting lineup. Recent minute allocations look fairly apprpriate.
Were they tanking or just sincerely trying to figure it out but just not til now? Should they be tanking? Tired of this kind of debate. Do whatever. The answer is in the long-run.
