The series features 10 players from each team who have known playoff histories of at least 213 minutes coming into this season. I haven't used this year's minutes in their career playoff / regular-season productivity (T) ratio : po/rs.

Playoff overachievers and underachievers tend to carry that particular trait throughout their career. Individual playoff series may vary widely, as do whole postseasons. But it's still better to know a player's po/rs history than to not know it.

So I've grabbed that vital statistic, along with this year's T rate and eWins/480 rate; projected minutes per game for each player; regressed to the mean their po/rs, according to career playoff minutes; further diminished their expectations due to the competition (summing to 1.00 eW per game).

I've also given the Lakers a boost relative to the Celtics, due to their season's stats being accrued in a tougher environment (the West).

An eWin differential of .527-.473 is equivalent to a pythagorean of .554-.446.
This first pass therefore favors Boston by 1.6 PPG; but the Lakes have a home court advantage.

It is interesting to compare the differences between eWins and the beta SPM. Particularly the Scoring/Turnover portion. Ron Artest and Rasheed Wallace got the most credit in this beta SPM for their scoring because they were very efficient and didn't turn the ball over much.

It would be more interesting if you were posting cumulative numbers. Single games are kind of momentary. Maybe it's personal preference, but I can hardly wait until players like Ray Allen are out of the negative. It's inconceivable that his contributions are actually less than nothing.

His -.30 eWins/480 Min suggest he was 130% less effective than the average player. This is hard for me to get my head around. Players don't have to be a negative version of themselves to lose by 13 points. Being 80-90% of normal will do that.

After 2 games, about half as many guys will be negative. For a whole series, it's pretty rare to net minus eWins. Orlando (vs Bos) only had Ryan Anderson (11 minutes) below zero.

On SPM, by definition at the end of a series the sum will be 0 (as it is for each game). The winning team's total SPM will equal half of the efficiency margin, the lowing team's total SPM will equal minus half of the efficiency margin. Each player is measured against the other players in the game, with the average player in the game/series/league equaling 0.

So it is. Average is zero, in Plusminusland.
And what is the frame of reference of a player that's, say, half as good as average? As good as 2 avg players? To answer this, we would have a SPM value equivalent to the 'replacement player', no?

Of 9 Celts playing over 2 minutes, 3 were <0 eW; and 3 were < -4.24 SPM -- these 3 were also < -8.5 , so maybe the RP SPM is in that range?

I generally see replacement level as -3, though in one game (as you noted) the spread is obviously wider.

Not quite. Top 2 Celts, Rondo and Ray, are barely = Gasol.
Their next 4, Pierce, KG, Sheed, and Perk (total .47) are not quite = Kobe + Bynum (.50) .

Pierce and Garnett are clearly due to check in. Who for the Lakers is overdue? -- Odom, of course.
Pretty sure Artest will not do anything splendid.

Kobe was good, Ray Allen was very bad. That about sums up this game! Odom played well, also. KG and Rondo did well, but couldn't make up for Ray.

I was kind of surprised to see Kobe taking a large lead in eWins, after a 10-29 shooting performance. But this SPM indicates the same, that his contribution was tops for the game.

He had 7 Reb, 4 Ast, 2 Stl, just 1 TO, and 3 blocks. I thought they were amazing blocks, though that doesn't count extra in any of our computations.

Rondo, with all of his versatility, still has shooting issues. Last night it was FT (1-4). In 3 games, effectively shooting .443.

How does Davis look so badly (-3.7) in SPM? He really got the Celts back in the game.

Lakers 2-15 from the arc. Including that banker from Odom.

Glen Davis: No ORBs, no assists, no steals, no blocks. Together, that made up for his good scoring performance (+2.23).

The Offensive fouls aren't accounted for in SPM except as turnovers... but the turnovers do hurt.

Assuming the C's pull this out . . . it's a definite possibility for Kobe to still win, but I'd like to review the only other time a player from a losing team won the Finals MVP - Jerry West. Just how dominating was West in that series?

Everyone is thinking if Pierce has another effort like last night, the MVP would be his. Otherwise Rondo. But I'm thinking that Garnett now has to be in the conversation according to MikeG's table above . . . he's limited LA's 2nd option (Gasol) to a large extent, that is for sure, and has seemed to have woken up after a slow start in the series.

Note Pierce, Rondo, and Ray are all playing 39-41 mpg, Garnett just 31.
In eWins/480, it's KG 2.05, Rondo 1.39, Pierce 1.28, Allen 0.18 .
Garnett's been the model of consistency, relative to these others. Both game-to-game and each series. Dip vs Orl.

Still, Kobe's got an advantage of some 60% (eW) over anyone for Bos.
This is a greater advantage perhaps than West in '69.

Depending on how Game 6 and possibly Game 7 pan out, if Kobe goes bonkers in one or two games and the Lakers lose, it'd be disappointing from a purely statistical perspective if he didn't win Finals MVP. He's clearly been the best player on the floor, but the Celtics have done an excellent job of bottling up his supporting cast.

With a clear intent to promote thread drift, let me begin by congratulating myself on my perspicacity. Prior to the 2007-08 season, I publicly claimed (and perhaps such remarks are conveniently absent from this forum) that the Cs could expect to win 1.75 championships in the KG/Big Three era. Neglecting next year of course, until game time tomorrow, this seems like a remarkable estimate. 0.5 expected championships tomorrow, and 0.25 the day after, and congratulations to Mike Z for these! (Can one hoist 0.75 of a banner in the Garden?)

This aside, I am hoping that this year's Celtics playoff run induces some serious reflection, both in the analytic and journalistic community, about fundamentals and player and team performance value. Though it was an exceptional year in this regard, there was a gross disregard for the capabilities of the Celtics in the playoffs, predicated on the most recent in-season performance, but completely neglecting their fundamental strength. Health (relative, anyway) turned out to be everything (with the possible exception of Rasheed Wallace's on/off switch). That pre-playoff predictions pooh-poohed the Cs chances is understandable - they were old and injured - but the pre-finals prediction bias (and within finals analysis) in favor of the Lakers cannot be redeemed.

The simple fact of the matter is that, when healthy (a big when), the Cs have been the class of the league since this group was formed. Period. No question. But injuries matter. They matter a lot.

And what is the diversionary point?

It might be too much to ask (primarily of the data) but wouldn't it be nice to see estimates of player/team value be expressed two-fold? First in terms of potential (some injury-normed baseline) and second in terms of actual expectation. This is actually very easy from a journalistic standpoint. More difficult from the analytic standpoint....but still.

That's tough, but is what I attempted to do from a SPM perspective. All I could do, though, was adjust the minutes played according to health. There is no good way to cull out "healthy" data from "unhealthy".

If their home odds are 60/40, then the chance of winning both is just 36%.
If they're over 70% at home, they would be favored to win both.

As for the injury thing, let me be a bit more precise - echoing previous comments made on the same subject. As suggested, it may be a quixotic goal - it being perhaps too much to ask of the data - but it sure would be nice to have estimates of "potential" player (then team) value, reflecting (agreed upon?) norms for aging and expected injuries.

Aging (from late 20s on, say) and injury, of course, are two different, but functionally related, things - differing measures of physical decrepitude. The older you are, all else equal, the more susceptible you are to injury. So, were the Celtics injured in March and April? Yes and no. The players I have in mind, KG and PP, had gotten injured (dinged up) previously, took minor time out from them, but ended up essentially playing through their conditions, with diminished capacity. This was no secret, having been discussed in the media. Similarly, in the championship year, KG had a mid-season groin injury (I think that was it), played some anyway, to clearly diminished capability, sat out some, and came back, never returning to early-season form, I think.

But the larger point is not to reformulate things just to explain the "unanticipated" Celtics' success this post-season. The point is that there are fundamentals and deviations from them. The valuation concepts that are employed should take into account all fundamentals, and injury and aging are decidedly fundamental. Admittedly, it is rarely the case that three future, aging HOFers play on the same team, and that the deviation between the team's potential vs. actual strength is an outlier. But still. The fact of the matter is that between 4 and 8, say, points per 100 possession were borrowed by other players/teams in the league this year, and the Cs took them back in the post-season.

If statistical constructs were improved to recognize such realities/conditionalities, the quality of commentary this post-season would (one can hope) have been much improved.

Well said. Almost something to be said of a "championship caliber team" vs simply "maxed out potential". (As in, people refer to a team's ceiling as "only good enough to make it out of 1 round" etc.)

Commenters have since the beginning of time felt free to say stuff like, "If the Big 3 are past their infirmities and can return in the playoffs to a semblance of their former selves, then the Celtics are formidable, perhaps unbeatable.

The if/then in the comment is only proven as time passes. Any or all injuries can return at any moment. You may recall that as the 2007-08 season commenced, and the Celts were steamrolling competition, the huge minutes being played by The3 were called into scrutiny.

By necessity and experience, their minutes have been reduced. It took most of 3 years to comprehend, but Doc Rivers appears to have played his cards right in year 3.

Statistics won't ever predict the return of injuries. First hand knowledge of each case will always be more relevant. Every year, someone will emerge from the East (and the West), and in general they will have made good decisions and had good luck. Hard to say which is more important.

Of course, and I'm being facetious. (I also find the "injury card" the media keeps playing to be an annoying oversimplification.)

The question here is what should have told us in mid-April that those nagging injuries would suddenly cease to be an issue come the postseason? Now obviously, the motivation is higher and there is more time off, which works to their advantage. However, you could have made the same arguments about San Antonio in mid-April, right? You can't turn one team's run into some grand overarching theory unless it also applies to other teams. If it doesn't, then Boston is simply a glorious outlier.

KG's 5 steals (8% steal rate) really skew the SPM totals a bit. This SPM, like most, overvalues steals as a sort of proxy for defensive play in the game.

Big Baby really did dominate in game 4!

It's amazing how much Pau and Kobe have separated themselves from the rest of their team. Nobody else is above average for the series (well, except Sasha Vujacic, and he doesn't count, does he?). And the Lakers have 3 of the 4 most negative major contributors in the series. Wow. It shows how shallow they are!

Perhaps a better way of looking at who helped the most would be a rough VORP calculation. I used a Replacement level of -3 SPM, which looks about right for this series. Obviously, the VORP concept is fuzzy in basketball; this is just to get a rough feel for the contributors. It pushes the guys who did nicely but in only a couple of minutes down to the bottom of the list.

Yes, it looks a lot more like mine now
If -3 SPM is about right in the regular season, shouldn't a battle between the 2 best teams accept value at a lower level?
Like -4 or even lower?

I've got Ray, Rasheed, Fisher, and Artest all at .23 to .35 of average value, and I think that is harsh.
(Could be said: they're 23% to 35% better than replacement level.)
This SPM+3 has them making negative contributions for 6 games.
How is the average fan supposed to interpret that?

That they made negative contributions over 6 games. I think most average fans would accept that!

Be aware: the -3 SPM is relative to the environment these were calculated in, which is the Laker/Celtics finals. A -3 level in this context is still above LEAGUE replacement level. If these teams average a +10 efficiency differential, then a -3 player in this series would be a -1 player in the league at large. So VORP in a LEAGUE context would be looking at a -5 player in this series as the replacement level.

is suggesting only 7 of 10 starters are contributing positively. Phil might replace Fisher and Artest, with Vujacic and Odom, but he then has no bench that contributes anything positive. Replace Ray with Nate or Tony?

If our stats are already insufficient to quantify the contributions in denying the opponent from scoring, then it seems we compound the misery by saying these guys' minutes are entirely replaceable; or that just not playing them at all would yield better results.

It doesn't seem possible that only 5 Lakers are contributing, except in the negative. I realize the numbers say this to you, but I don't think there's a person in the franchise or the fanbase who could find this believable.

On the contrary, I think a lot of fans would agree with that!

That said, maybe -3 isn't right for a small sample size, where the scatter is bigger?

B-R.com's Win Shares seems to concur.
It happens that I kept a copy of the numbers at the end of the conference finals. Subtracting those from the current (final) ones:
