2014 playoff summaries and misc.
Seeing some games and series that are chock-full of future Hall of Famers -- Dal/SA most notably -- I wondered if an inordinate number of great careers are represented in this year's playoffs.
Easier to state it quantitatively: Among current players with the most career Win Shares -- http://bkref.com/tiny/so8TO -- 16 of the top 20 are with teams that made the playoffs.
Some players disappeared in midseason: Billups (Det), Terry (Brk). Besides Billups, the other 3 whose team is off for the year were Lakers : Kobe, Nash, Gasol.
Of the next 20, again 16 are in the playoffs (or their teams are). Those who missed were Knicks -- Amare, Carmelo, Chandler -- plus R Jefferson (Uta).
Looking over the 41-60 group, I don't see the pattern breaking. Do veteran teams overwhelmingly make the playoffs? Or do veterans gravitate to contenders?

Re: 2014 playoff summaries and misc.
Summaries of 1st-round series. From b-r.com, we have PER, WS/48 and WS. Alongside are eWins and (avg = 1.00) eWin rate for a series. In a regulation game, 480 player minutes are required for one win. In series with overtimes, note a rate different than per-480.
Win Shares are unadjusted for extra minutes, so overtime games generate >1.00 WS.
The eWins system is a slavedriver: you get nothing for your overtime work.A few players with zero-2 minutes were dropped; and a minute is added or removed from some players, to get team total minutes.

Re: 2014 playoff summaries and misc.
For those interested, I've posted the Top-30 Playoff-Performers through the first-round. Ratings are sorted by Per-Game production, with Per-Minute numbers on the left to compare. The "HDR" metric I'm using is just a RAPM-SPM, so the numbers should be on a RAPM scale. Opponent strength is accounted for using regular-season SRS (unlike some who use Playoffs only).

Re: 2014 playoff summaries and misc.
Why did all centers play so badly in the Atl-Ind series? Hibbert, Mahinmi, Antic, and Brand were about the 4 worst players in that series.
Pacers went centerless for about 5 mpg. Hawks more like 12 mpg -- including Brand as C for 12 mpg.

After round 1, Ray Allen had the lowest WS (-.135) of any player from an advancing team.
After one game in round 2, he had .078 WS -- a gain of .213 WS in 26 minutes of play. That's a .393 WS/48 rate.

Re: 2014 playoff summaries and misc.
Through 3 games vs Por, Duncan, Leonard, Splitter, Green, and Belinelli have a combined 2 turnovers in 400 minutes.
Belinelli is another who was about the worst player on his team in round 1, and about the best in round 2. Kawhi Leonard and Patty Mills have also made great turnarounds.
Ginobili led the Spurs in round 1 and is inconsequential in the last 3 games.

Re: 2014 playoff summaries and misc.
I'm not someone that often complains about a coaches' rotations, thinking they, for the most part, know better what they're doing. But why why why is Scott Brooks playing Caron Butler. Butler can't defend a chair, yet he's put on Jamal Crawford. Adams over Nick Collison? It almost feels like Brooks is trying to loose the series
Re: 2014 playoff summaries and misc.
Well, let's assume nobody is trying to lose. But I was thinking along the same lines: Are coaches such geniuses that they know immediately upon starting a series, that a given player is in or out of the rotation?
We hear about "bad matchups" and such; and we also see players whose performance seems to change dramatically between series.
A commenter during yesterday's game said Caron Butler excels at both ends of the floor. Maybe he meant 'equally good at both ends' -- he's been crap on offense.
Nick Collison missed the easiest shot of the game, late, point blank at the rim. Maybe he doesn't feel good.
I just thought OKC devolved into guys going 1-on-1. A couple of superhero types.
Ibaka was 2-2 from the arc and 0-3 inside it.
Durant and Westbrook took 58 of 92 shots, or 63%
Clipps deserved to win, Thunders didn't.
P.S. -- Is Doc Rivers a genius? What was up with Danny Granger playing most of the 4th, while DeAndre sat? He didn't score or pass, and he didn't stop anybody, except with a few fouls. But the team did great.

Re: 2014 playoff summaries and misc.
I was harping on Randy Whitman all game yesterday for his insistence on trotting out Gooden/Harrington all 4th Q. They make a lot of mistakes. Vogel has all the evidence he needs that Evan Turner has brought AIDS into the Pacers lockerroom, and yet he hasn't been completely banished from the rotation.J.E. wrote:I'm not someone that often complains about a coaches' rotations, thinking they, for the most part, know better what they're doing. Doc Rivers, who I am quite fond of, continues to get smashed w/ Collison paired with Paul (against OKC), and JJ Redick can basically only guard Thabo. He's also been overly conservative with foul trouble, given the lack of depth with his bigs. Brooks makes multiple mistakes constantly, some of the ones you mention aren't even the most egregious - to me, the simple lack of staggering RWB and Durant's rest is mind blowing, given its the easiest adjustment he can make which would immediately improve "2nd unit" performance. And so on and so on.
Realistically I trust what Pop does through and through, if he does or does not play a guy (game 1 cameo, Aron Baynes!) it's almost certainly optimal, if he matches up various players it's likely the best play, and if he funnels offense in a certain manner it's for a reason. Spo has gotten much better (James Jones in the 1st round!) and is not afraid to try things. It's not a coincidence those are the two teams that are fated to play again in the finals.

Re: 2014 playoff summaries and misc.
Even when both guys are in the game, they each carry an enormous work load. It's amazing that they aren't exhausted in every 4th quarter.... the simple lack of staggering RWB and Durant's rest is mind blowing...
Maybe Brooks feels that the alternatives are :
(a) stagger their breaks; when one guy rests, the other's work load is at least doubled.
(b) rest them together; let various groups of subs mix it up, perhaps tire out and/or confuse the opponent which has prepared to compete against the 2 stars.
With (b), both stars come back rested and ready to take over the game.
In this series (5 games) KD and RW play 33% of OKC minutes; take 54% of est. true shot attempts; score 57% of points;
also get 32% of rebounds, 70% of assists, 52% of steals.
[change of topic alert]
What's all the hubub about the "game deciding" call on the late Reggie Jackson/Matt Barnes interaction? It should have been a foul; no way should it be Clippers ball out.
The refs didn't have the option to fix their non-call; they could have made it much worse, and they opted not to.
