-- see previous post --
Only half as many top rebounders this year as we'd expect?
Among players with >300 playoff minutes last year and this year, last year's best rebounders:

Code: Select all

2013 TReb% 2014
16.7 Duncan 13.9
15.9 Hibbert 11.3
14.1 Leonard 12.9
14.1 Ibaka 12.3
13.7 Bosh 10.0
12.6 Stephenson 11.3
12.4 LeBron 11.3
12.3 D West 10.5
11.5 Durant 12.2
10.6 George 11.5

13.4 avg 11.7
Last year's top 8 have all dropped off this year. On average, down by 16%
Are the best rebounding teams all in the playoffs this year? Is a faster pace giving a higher share of rebounds to perimeter guys?
Inquiring minds want to know.

Last year, after one game in the NBA Finals, Danny Green had hit .432 from the arc in playoffs. He then hit 5-5 and 7-9 in the next 2 games.
This year, going into the Western finals, he'd hit .432 of his threes; then shot 4-5 and 7-10 to open the series.

His attempts and minutes are down this year -- from 4.9 per game to 3.7; minutes/G from 30 to 22
After last year's outburst, he hit .423 of his remaining threes.

Spurs have gained a point per minute when he's on the floor in games 1-2.
He hasn't attempted a FT in over 170 minutes.

None have been very consistent between series, except that Diaw has gotten consistently stronger.
Ginobili has just 3 TO vs Okl.

What does Chris Andersen do so badly that he can't go more than 20 mpg?
D Wade increases his minutes and his play in each round so far.
Rashard Lewis' career is at least momentarily revived.
Heat are averaging almost 5 above-avg players per series.

I would guess that Birdman's main issue is that he's a tall guy on a smallball team that already has Chris Bosh.

The Spurs have outscored playoff opponents by 8 ppg. Miami has been better by 7 ppg. Next best is the Clipps at +2.0
But how do they rank when you consider the competition?
There are a few ways to do this; but relative to their playoff opponents' regular-season SRS, they rank like this:

Code: Select all

2014 season - playoffs - - - - - - - - - - - -
Team SRS MOV oppSRS SRS diff impr
SAS 8.00 8.0 4.59 12.59 4.59 82.5
LAC 7.27 2.0 5.85 7.85 .58 7.5
Mia 4.15 7.0 .69 7.69 3.54 53.1
Dal 2.91 -2.0 8.00 6.00 3.09 21.6

Hou 5.06 .3 4.44 4.74 -.32 -1.9
Okl 6.66 -1.0 5.63 4.63 -2.03 -38.7
Was .48 .9 2.53 3.43 2.95 32.4
GSW 5.15 -4.5 7.27 2.77 -2.38 -16.7

Team SRS MOV oppSRS SRS diff impr
Atl -.88 -1.0 3.63 2.63 3.51 24.6
Brk -1.58 -1.3 3.22 1.92 3.50 42.0
Mem 2.18 -5.4 6.66 1.26 -.92 -6.4
Por 4.44 -6.2 6.40 .20 -4.24 -46.7

Ind 3.63 -1.0 1.14 .14 -3.49 -66.4
Tor 2.55 -1.6 -1.58 -3.18 -5.73 -40.1
Chi 1.20 -4.6 .48 -4.12 -5.32 -26.6
Cha -.89 -9.8 4.15 -5.65 -4.76 -19.0

avg 3.15 -1.26 3.94 2.68 -.47 .08
Columns: RS SRS, PO margin of victory, PO opponents' (games weighted) RS SRS, PO SRS = MOV + oppSRS, diff = PO SRS - RS SRS , impr = diff * G
The averages are for all teams weighed equally.

Multiplied by games, the Pacers are these playoffs biggest underachievers, in points for/against, relative to their regular season.
The Clipps handled the Warriors by 4.5 ppg and then were outscored by the Thunder by 1 ppg.

Kevin Durant ended up playing 815 playoff minutes over 19 games, averaging 29.6 pts, 8.9 reb, and 3.9 ast.
The only other players with such averages over so many minutes: Olajuwon in 1995 and LeBron in 2012 -- both in title runs.

Requiring just 600 minutes, add another LeBron year (2006), Kareem in 1974; and in the ABA, Connie Hawkins in 1968 and George McGinnis, 1975.

Westbrook went 735 minutes, with 26.7, 7.3, 8.1 averages.
In 15+ games, only McGinnis (ABA) had done this.
In at least 10 games, you get a couple of Oscars.
