Post by Mike G »

This was done before the meltdown and in midseason, so here we go again.
The diff column is the sum of the square roots of the difference in each category.
Stl, TO, and Blk rates are made up for oldtimers. Sco, Reb, Ast rates standardized to 100 pts and 44 reb/tm/G.
Showing just the most similar season for each player.

Re: 2011 players and historic statistically similar seasons

Post by EvanZ »

Have you thought about normalizing each category before you take the differences? It seems that in your current method, one point of difference in scoring is equivalent to one block or one steal. A player who averages one more block than another player is probably a vastly better defender, and that difference is much more important than a single point scored. Just a thought/suggestion. It's cool stuff.

I complee agretely. And I think 'bigger' categories should have a bigger importance.
See how Carmelo compares to himself when we change just one category as you suggest:

A player with identical stats, but who scores 1 more Pt/36 is almost identical.
With otherwise identical stats but with 1 more Blk/36 is not even among the 10 most similar.

In the 2nd 3 lines, a player who scores 50% more is way dissimilar.
One who is the same but blocks 50% more is almost identical.

This is about how I want this program to work.

Now if we toggle each of his rates separately, just to arrive at the arbitrary diff of .20, we have:

Code: Select all

diff Sco Reb Ast PF Stl TO Blk
.00 26.6 8.0 3.2 3.1 .9 2.8 .6

.20 31.4 8.0 3.2 3.1 .9 2.8 .6
.20 26.6 10.7 3.2 3.1 .9 2.8 .6
.20 26.6 8.0 5.0 3.1 .9 2.8 .6
.20 26.6 8.0 3.2 4.8 .9 2.8 .6
.20 26.6 8.0 3.2 3.1 2.0 2.8 .6
.20 26.6 8.0 3.2 3.1 .9 4.5 .6
.20 26.6 8.0 3.2 3.1 .9 2.8 1.5

1.40 31.4 10.7 5.0 4.8 2.0 4.5 1.5
In bigger categories, to create .20 diff, a larger number is added; but it's a lesser proportional increase.
That's the utility of the square root.

In the last line, all 7 changes are incorporated.
That looks like George McGinnis in the '75 ABA playoffs.

Re: 2011 players and historic statistically similar seasons

Post by Crow »

Just compared your similars for Aldridge, Anthony and Billups to the the similars found for those players using B-R's WinShare based method for both first x years of the player and his similars and for entire careers. On Aldrige and Anthony not a single player appears in the top similars on your method and either of B-R's. For Billups, just one similar on both (Nash). This is meant as an observation, not necessarily as a criticism but I was still surprised to see such low similarity in similars. Of course I just checked three and the pattern may not be widespread, but then again it might be.

It probably is rather typical. I don't know why they've given up on finding similar players over there, instead just comparing total win shares, among players at the same position.

LaMarcus Aldridge is a scoring power forward who may play a bit of center, and all those listed in this thread: Bosh, Rasheed, Dirk, Josh Howard, Issel, Vin Baker, Spencer Haywood, Okur, Donyell, Garnett -- are basically that.

At b-r.com, with similar WS in 5 years: Dischinger (1) was a FG who didn't rebound; Lou Hudson played even more G (at 6-5) and rebounded less; Toni Kukoc got his WS by passing and playing for the Bulls.

The others are more similar in their productions and might conceivably sub in for L.A. without disrupting the lineup. That's what I look for in 'similar player'.

In an earlier version at b-r.com, only players the same age were considered, and now it's no factor at all.
It would be nice if b-r.com would guesstimate rebound% before 1970. That seems to be a barrier to comparing players from earlier.

Note, too, the players I posted are for just this past season, finding the most similar single seasons by others. B-R.com has the luxury of comparing through X seasons, which has a lot of potential.

Looking at Billups' similar-WS careers, about half are PG's; then there are Kobe, Ray, Gervin (but not if he's a F), Vince, Iverson.

Carmelo is similar to Battier, also to Greg Ballard? Some ABA guys (Neto, Kenon) who probably wouldn't be close in the NBA. No adjustment there, apparently.

Alright, thanks fo rthe reminder that your similarity study was for single seasons. Still I would have hoped there would be more similarity between the approaches. I agree more with your approach to finding similars.

Perhaps a similarity study could be 1/4 to 1/2 an overall metric (or a blend of several) and the rest from discrete stats. I have thought about how I might weight it but haven't pushed it thru yet. I'd do it in separate groups for PGs (or PGs and combos), wings and bigs.

I do whole careers, too. For that, I like to look at standardized per-minute similars and equivalent totals, and see who's on both lists.
The career eTotals actually uses the Total of all categories (ePts+eReb+...) as it's own category; this forces players with similarly-sized careers to look more similar than 2 players where one is greater than the other in every category.

I also don't try to create an absolute similarity (of 1.00 or 1000 or whatever) but just go with the aggregate difference in their stats
The scale is not the same (for per36 and eTotals), but I've kind of adjusted for it. The magnitude only serves to rank by similarity (or least different).

It would, I think, be a great disservice to the method to chop it into 3 or 5 or 7 categories by 'position'. Players' functions on the court are described in large part by their productions.

Parker and Billups certainly don't score in the same style, but they've been about equally effective. Other rates almost too close. Billups' famously low TO rate is matched by few, and they have lower Ast.

I made a start at creating a weighted similarity system based on standardized versions of:

MP TS% eFG% 3p/36 ft/36 pf/36 DRB% AST% Steals+Block%s TOV% USG% ORtg DRtg orapm drapm

The first dataset included data for just 100 players. Ideally it would be for all players and possibly by broad "position". I sorted them into PGs, wings and bigs.

The weights are first cut and individually somewhat subjective right now though they are designed to be roughly in line with previously determined Factor importance weights from Dean Oliver and Ed Kupfer- if you account for the discrete stat weights plus the implicit weights of those discrete stats in the roll-up metrics.

They also sum to basically 50/50 offense / defense, while most similarity systems I know of do not. (A simple WinShares similarity system would be an exception.)

The weights:

10 MP

5 TS%
5 eFG%
10 AST%
5 3p/36
10 USG%
10 ft/36
15 TOV%
10 ORtg
25 orapm

15 DRB%
20 S+B%
15 pf/36
15 DRtg
30 drapm

200 Total

(Offensive Rebounding would get added back in)

How does similarity end up being a single number? Have you just summed the weighted factors you've listed? Doesn't that make it an overall 'performance' metric?

Is Rondo similar to Parker? Parker scores 70% more. Rondo rebounds 55% more, assists more, steals twice as often.

Matt Bonner and Joakim Noah -- Not especially interchangeable for any teams I can think of.

James Harden and Kyle Korver -- How similar?

I am sorry. I made a mistake and spoke further about this project too soon. What I had done was develop a dataset with player comparisons to league averages. It could be used to find player to player similarities but I hadn't done that yet.

Here is a test case of player to player similarity scores with Rondo from most similar to least similar among PGs within the modest dataset:

Jason Kidd 128
Andre Miller 153
Mike Conley 155
Jameer Nelson 206
Chris Paul 209
Russell Westbrook 223
Derrick Rose 231
Mario Chalmers 232
Derek Fisher 234
Raymond Felton 235
Jason Terry 235
Gilbert Arenas 250
Tony Parker 259
Steve Blake 259
Mike Bibby 260
Shannon Brown 263
Ty Lawson 270
George Hill 285
Eric Maynor 292
Jose Barea 306
Mo Williams 343

Parker is middle of the pack on similarity to Rondo. Nobody is that close to Rondo with the first 3 having more similarity than the rest.

The similarity score is the sum of the weighted absolute values of the differences between the two players stated in terms of standard deviations by category.

Here is the similarity comparison for Harden within the included players:

Rudy Gay 127
Richard Jefferson 127
Nicolas Batum 135
Wesley Matthews 140
Kyle Korver 143
Gerald Wallace 153
Marvin Williams 155
Sam Young 166
Trevor Ariza 168
Willie Green 169
Shane Battier 170
Luol Deng 172
Ray Allen 172
Ron Artest 175
Brandon Roy 176
J.R. Smith 177
Wilson Chandler 178
Manu Ginobili 179
Jeff Green 182
Paul Pierce 184
J.J. Redick 184
Keith Bogans 185
Danilo Gallinari 186
Gary Neal 190
Marco Belinelli 200
James Jones 203
O.J. Mayo 207
Jamal Crawford 210
Kevin Durant 212
Thabo Sefolosha 214
Jason Richardson 217
Arron Afflalo 223
Ronnie Brewer 228
Tony Allen 231
Joe Johnson 233
Kobe Bryant 234
LeBron James 249
Dwyane Wade 254
Hedo Turkoglu 259

Ginobili comes out as middle of the pack on similarity to Harden by this methodology. Korver comes out relatively similar to Harden by not being that different from him on anything included in the metric besides minutes and rate of going to the free throw line. They look pretty similar across the simple discrete stats here http://bkref.com/tiny/HSHuX and WinShares / 48 has Harden at .156 and Korver at .149.

Who do you have as most similar to Rondo and Harden amongst current bigger minute players? I see that our methods agreed on Kidd being the most similar current player to Rondo based on your Feb. 2011 post here viewtopic.php?f=2&t=154

Serge Ibaka's best similars within the dataset:

Marc Gasol 118
Emeka Okafor 120
Kenyon Martin 141
Joakim Noah 143
DeJuan Blair 148
Al Horford 150
Andrew Bynum 150
Taj Gibson 150
Brendan Haywood 153
Ryan Anderson 155

This was an early look to see some similars. I probably load the other players for a complete dataset at another time. I might further tune the weights as well.

Minimum 720 minutes. 2010-11 rates, adjusted for team situations.

.25 Kyle Korver 15.4 3.3 2.6 3.0 .7 1.2 .3
And so Korver, at #14 here, is the one name to appear among your closest 15.
You have JR Smith at #16, and he's #2 here.

1.20 Chris Paul 18.7 4.8 10.0 2.5 2.4 2.3 .1
Only one player has such a high Ast rate, one other has such a Stl rate, 2 others score as little. A much more unique player, in other words.

In the per-36 similarity, this program doesn't look for any overall assessment of the players. Rondo looks better than Calderon and Kidd in almost every area.
In the sense of players being interchangeable in lineups, it may be worthwhile to include an 'overall' metric in the assessment.
But for every element you add, you weaken the significance of the others.
With this, you can say Calderon is "Rondo Lite".

6 PGs included in my 100 player subset are in your top 9 similars for Rondo. Nash, Wall and Calderon were not and would probably not high on the similarity list. The Offensive and Defensive Ratings and offensive and defensive RAPMs are all very different for Rondo in each case for each player.

Our comparisons for Harden will vary in large part because I made the choice to look at wings while you stuck with SGs. Different approaches. My player subset is a major limiting factor on having guys in both top 10s too.

"for every element you add, you weaken the significance of the others"

My major adds are the Offensive and Defensive Ratings and offensive and defensive RAPMs. I am fine with giving them heightened recognition even if it means mildly reducing the separate significance of some discrete stats. To me these are probably the most important stats for similarity.
Your SCO is a role up while my metric breaks out eFG%, TS%, usage and FT/36. There is a contradiction here with what I said above, but at the time I liked having those discrete stats broken out. Maybe it would be better to have all 3 levels of stat- the discrete stats, a combined scoring impact level stat, and the offensive rating and ORAPM. Maybe the weights should be adjusted further. As I said this was a first draft and subject to change.

"it may be worthwhile to include an 'overall' metric in the assessment."

I included overall offensive and defensive metrics but ideally a true overall metric (with offense and defense) probably should be included as net player impact is obviously a vital measure of a player and of a player to other players. That would be a 4th level of stat that I probably would include in a revised metric. I debated whether to include demographic information previously and decided not to, though that is an additional optional layer that could be added for viewing, especially important if you wanted to compare players at similar ages (including from different time periods) or wanted to try to isolate the impact of physical characteristics on performance.
