2023 Draft notes
Re: 2023 Draft notes
Jaquez hasn't taken off yet, but has the 8th best BPM in draft class for guys with more than tiny minutes.
-1 on both BPM and Darko.
(Was 4th on my draft board. Higher than anyone else in a survey of almost 100 twitter boards. Average rank was 38.)

Re: 2023 Draft notes
Jaquez with a big game yesterday.
Sasser slipped quite a bit recently but still leads.
K George, much hyped, -5 BPM so far.

Re: 2023 Draft notes
Wembanyama 0 for 6 from 3pt range so far today. Season average falls to 27.8%.
Re: 2023 Draft notes
Podziemski takes BPM lead for minute qualifiers. Sasser 3rd, Jackson Davis 4th, Jaquez 7th.
Wembanyama 10th.
A Black, Sheppard, N Smith, Bates aĺl under -5. Henderson still -13, Jett Howard -20...
Are anyone's picks performing better? Lots were way lower on these positive guys and lots were higher on to date duds.

Re: 2023 Draft notes
There were at least 18 guys in last NBA draft (almost all young) where I was way below consensus. 3 have done better than I expected. 15 have not.

Recent thoughts on draft philosophy:
'Scouting is watching prospects but also how they interact with teammates and opponents.'
'Goal is to marry stats and eye test.'
My reaction: ideally, to take scouting to another level, would be to compute RAPM pairs for prospects. With / without teammates, and with opponents. In absence of RAPM pairs, spend more time on raw pair data.
Spend more time on eye test to "explain" player pairs. Not just the prospect as an individual.
Guess at main coaching points and response to these coaching points.
Understanding many many relationships. Takes basketball knowledge, people knowledge and analytic perspectives / tools.
Cooperation, dominance, relationship processing / learning.
Eye test scoring of player dimensions and / or factors? Start at factor level and drill down if you can / want.
Developmental determinism is a good topic. It should influence mock drafts.
"attack a value..."
Developmental
Independent ability vs use in context. Context of teammates, perhaps conference and certainly Coach.
Which player values were attacked and maybe not vs. unsuccessful attack?
Objective? Win more in general to can you get us 1 more win in playoffs? Raises question of importance of average contribution vs peak and valley levels and frequencies.
I tend to emphasize average performance but probably should consider peaks and valleys more. How much was peak ability something a Coach could call upon vs. just stumble into?
I do look at / rate in GS16+ games and 20+pt games.
Usage is something you can call upon at different levels. I guess anything really.
BPM / RAPM / eye test in general or vs position or playoff or title position player.
A Thunder player said Presti gives everybody numbers to hit. Is that attacking values and / or developmental determinism and / or potentially Coaching and system disruption?
Setting values for prospect archetype production...
Archetype vs positionless basketball players... both concepts can be overdone but most players will fill a player type in NBA. Positionless or non-archetype are a minority, probably under 20% of players
Something like 13 player types and maybe 3 quality levels. Maybe other sub-types but quality is the main sub-type.
Give players specific individual numbers to hit or aim for team numbers or hit team numbers by drilling down to individual numbers than produce desired team numbers? Team number targets or maximize sum of player skills?
What can be said of Celtics design approach ?
