Re: MVP Race
I wondered if they had changed things when they came up with the final 3 list. Marketing hype I suppose.

MVP Race
I agree with Mike that the MVP race is not close. If you use the magic metric to rank total contribution, Jokic has a season total over 2300, with no other player being over 1900. I use the product of the per game and per minute rating to rank players according to talent, but think the MVP should be...

Worst All Star Snub
Every few years I go back and see how the Magic Metric holds up against newer player ratings. I always felt the best measure was a combination of the per game and per minute rating, and I rated players as a product of the two. Just pulled this years stats, and it appears Jimmy Butler was the greates...

Re: Harden vs Jordan
The total number of possessions per game has gone up, since the shot clock was reduced.
Thus, it is hard to compare the statistical numbers as there are more points, rebounds, etc, with more possessions.

Re: Magic Metric Player ratings
I was hoping someone else would do the math and find my error. I can't believe the performance per minute has increased that much. Perhaps it has, with the rule changes to the NBA. It may be interesting to contrast the Magic Metric Player rating system with Player Efficiency. Here is the current ran...

Magic Metric Player ratings
I used to run a website, magicmetric.com, that listed the NBA player ratings on a per minute and per game basis. I could never decide which of the two were more important, so I ranked players by a product of the two. The average player had a per minute rating of .4/minute with good players averaging...

Re: 2013-2014 Top sixty players
Thanks for this effort. It appears MM likes guards more than the others, bigs not so much. What is CBS? Chris Paul at #43 ? MM uses only box stats, and I think everyone agrees that the box doesn't value defensive presence enough. Maybe one reason the bigs don't get enough love. But I do believe the...

Re: 2013-2014 Top sixty players
CBS seems to penalize players that have missed a lot of games due to injury.
I was going to do a top 100 list, but got really, really tired last night, lol.

2013-2014 Top sixty players
I took the player rankings from 5 sources, Magic Metric( product of per game and per minute rating), PER, eff, xRAPM, and CBS. Threw out the high and low ranking for each player, averaged the position and ranked accordingly. Overall ╔══════╦═══════════════════╦════════════╦══════╦══════╦═══════╦════...

Re: Magic Metric at the All Star break
Dan, Thanks for the kind words. I guess I am one of the old guys now, lol; and an obscure, relatively unknown pioneer. Without question, the box score stats do not reflect all of the player's contributions. And it is extra hard to evaluate NBA players contributions across varying competition and wit...

Re: Magic Metric at the All Star break
Paul George is a great player. But I wouldn't take him ahead of Love, Carmelo, Blake Griffin, or Dirk.
You could make a case for George ahead of Cousins, Westbrook, Hardin, or Alridge, without a debate from me.
