"A TRIBUTE TO ARMED
FORCES BASKETBALL 1941 - 1969"
AVAILABLE NOW!!!!!!!!!
Basketball and the military have enjoyed a long partnership.
"A Tribute to Armed Forces Basketball: 1941 - 1969" by Seymour Smith,
Jack Rimer and Dick Triptow, chronicles some of the game's finest
players and teams through World War II, the Korean War, the Cold War
and Viet Nam. Forty of the leading service players and 40 of the top
teams were selected through the various eras, along with photos of
those individuals and teams. It also provides little known facts
concerning the many other players listed in the Quick Dribbles sections.
But you will find it was not all fun and games.
Coulby Gunther would join Pittsburgh seven games into the Basketball
Association of America's maiden 1946-47 season after serving in the
Pacific Theatre and spending nine months in military hospitals.
Future Hall of Famer Bob Davies participated in both European and
Pacific campaigns, and fellow Hall of Famer Andy Phillip hit the beach
at Iwo Jima.
Ralph Kaplowitz, who would play for New York and Philadelphia in the
new BAA, flew fighter escort for the Enola Gay on its historic flight
to Hiroshima.
Major Don Holleder, one of West Point's leading rebounders in 1954-55,
was killed in action in Viet Nam while rescuing members of a trapped
platoon.
And so it goes. They are all here. Hundreds of men who served in the
Armed Forces and contributed to our great game of basketball, as well
as providing the morale, recreation and diversion for their fellow
service personnel and the general public who watched the games.
